Testimonials

I cannot thank you enough for this class. It’s been a journey to come back to a dance class where I finally feel comfortable with my own body. This class was the first time where I felt that confidence. Being surrounded by a community what I can now consider home brings the ultimate joy and best support. You as a teacher are enlightening and inspirational. You get people going and feel good about themselves. I see this class as a new chapter and something that needs to stay for a long time.

Emotionally it always enriches my life to have the opportunity of engaging and being in a space of WOC only. Body Remedy offers this and thereby improves my mental health.

Group exercise with other WOC offers a safer space to the mainstream spaces where WOC are grossly under represented and if, as in my experience, present are made to feel invisible while feeling intimidated.

It’s a really special experience to be at an exercise class with women of colour only. When I’ve been to other classes in the past I’m usually the only one so it’s amazing to not feel like an outsider, to be with a diverse group of women of colour and a facilitator. The exercises and movements feel like they are inspired by our rich cultures, it’s really refreshing and joyful.

I attended your Body Remedy session and found it very helpful after a stressful day.

I am from The Caribbean and appreciated being able to meet other people of colour in Scotland.

Group exercise makes it easier for me to maintain consistency and routine. Thank you.

Mele is also great at creating spaces and atmospheres that are calming, safe and free of judgement - which is important as someone who might usually be too intimidated to engage in these kinds of activities normally because I am not an athlete, performer, artist or dancer. These sessions have also been really healing in that it creates a scheduled time every week to feel part of a community, and to meet new people and reconnect with old friends and collaborators.

It’s a way of being active in a way I’m comfortable with, without watching a white yoga instructor on a screen lol. It’s so much more freeing being around women of colour in this context as I don’t have to feel as hyper-aware of who I am. I can just get on with it, also a nice bonus of making connections with woc, we tend to be so busy a lot of the time. It being free is a huge factor for me to be able to do this too.

Body Remedy offers time to recover and let go of the ever mindful veil carried by WOC as we navigate through white, heterosexual, patriarchal spaces.

We are a very new and small organisation. We welcome feedback.

Attending the body remedy workshops is a form of mental therapy for me through physical exercise and breathing exercises. In focusing on the wellness of my body, I feel that my mind is able to completely attune itself and I am able to let go of the daily stresses that I carry in my body day to day.
